How the Calculations Work
The bag label tells you a percentage, not a dose. A 32-0-4 fertilizer is 32% nitrogen by weight, so most of what's in the bag is filler. To hit a target nitrogen rate, divide that rate by the percentage, then scale by your lawn's area in thousands of square feet. This calculator runs that math for every application and for the full season, then rounds up to whole bags so you know exactly what to buy.

Example 1: Cool-season lawn
A 5,000 sq ft fescue lawn targets 3.5 lbs N/year over 4 applications using 32-0-4 fertilizer. Each application needs 0.875 lb N per 1,000 sq ft → (0.875 / 0.32) × 5 = 13.7 lbs of product, or one 40 lb bag with leftover for the next round.
Example 2: Warm-season lawn
A 8,000 sq ft Bermuda lawn targets 2.5 lbs N/year over 3 applications using 20% N fertilizer. Each application needs 0.83 lb N per 1,000 sq ft → (0.83 / 0.20) × 8 = 33.3 lbs of product, just under one 40 lb bag per application.
